Aminos & BCAAs: Do You Actually Need Them?

Do you actually need BCAAs? The honest answer.

Key takeaways
  • If you already hit your daily protein target, you likely don't need BCAAs.
  • Aminos help most when training fasted or through long sessions.
  • Aminos + Hydration adds electrolytes for hydration and recovery.
  • Whole protein already contains all the aminos BCAAs provide.

BCAAs have been on every supplement shelf for years, and plenty of people buy them without ever questioning whether they need to. So let’s settle it. Do you actually need BCAAs, or is your protein already doing the job? The honest answer is “it depends”, and it depends on a couple of things you can check for yourself in a minute.

What BCAAs and aminos actually are

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, and your muscles use them to repair and grow after training. BCAAs are three of them: leucine, isoleucine and valine. EAAs are the essential amino acids your body can’t make on its own, so you have to get them from food or a supplement.

A dedicated amino product gives you those building blocks in a quick, drinkable form. That’s the whole idea. It’s not magic, and it won’t outwork your diet, but it has its moments.

The honest take: do you need them?

Here’s the bit most brands skip. If you already hit your daily protein target, your whole protein is providing all the amino acids you need, BCAAs included. A scoop of whey protein is loaded with them. In that case a dedicated BCAA isn’t essential, and we’d rather tell you that than sell you something you don’t need.

So when do aminos earn a spot? A few situations make them genuinely useful:

  • Training fasted, when you haven’t eaten beforehand and want some aminos in the tank
  • Hydration and electrolytes, especially on bigger or sweatier sessions
  • Sipping something through a long workout to keep you going
  • Making water more enjoyable so you actually drink more of it across the day

If none of those apply to you and your protein intake is dialled in, you can skip them. If a few of them do, that’s where a product like ours fits.

What’s in Aminos + Hydration

Our product is Aminos + Hydration, an amino and electrolyte powder you add to water. It’s built to do two jobs at once. Per serve you get:

  • 4g BCAAs in a 2:1:1 ratio
  • 1g EAAs
  • 1.3g electrolyte blend to support hydration
  • 750mg coconut water powder
  • 1g glutamine
  • No caffeine or stimulants, and gluten free

The electrolytes and coconut water powder are why this leans as much on hydration as it does on aminos. It supports hydration and helps replenish the minerals you lose through sweat, which is handy when you’re working hard and water alone feels a bit flat.

How to use it

It’s flexible, which is part of the appeal. Use one scoop before, during or after training to get aminos and electrolytes in around your session. Or use half a scoop to a full scoop any time of day to flavour your water and support your hydration.

That second use is underrated. If you struggle to drink enough water, a flavoured scoop in your bottle is a simple nudge to get more in. The active flavours are Grape and Red Candy Sticks, both built to make a litre of water something you’ll actually finish.

Aminos vs protein: which one and when

Think of it as two tools for different moments. Protein is your main source of amino acids and the one to prioritise. If you’re hitting your target across the day, that’s the heavy lifting done.

Aminos sit alongside it for the in-between. A fasted morning session, a long workout where you want to sip something, a hot day where hydration matters. You don’t have to choose one over the other. Most people who use aminos still get the bulk of their protein from food and shakes, and treat the aminos as a session and hydration drink rather than a protein replacement.

Aminos for hydration

Because this one carries an electrolyte blend and coconut water powder, it doubles as a hydration drink. Electrolytes are the minerals your body loses through sweat, and topping them up supports proper hydration when you’re sweating a lot.

If your main goal is hydration on big training days or in the heat, the electrolyte side of this product does the work, and the aminos are a bonus on top. If your goal is purely electrolytes with no aminos, a dedicated hydration option might suit you better. Worth knowing which job you’re buying for.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need BCAAs? Not always. If you already hit your daily protein target, your whole protein is supplying your amino acids and a dedicated BCAA isn’t essential. They’re more useful for training fasted, for hydration, or for sipping through a long session.

What’s the difference between BCAAs and EAAs? BCAAs are three amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. EAAs are all the essential amino acids your body can’t make on its own. Our Aminos + Hydration has 4g BCAAs and 1g EAAs per serve.

Can I drink aminos all day? Yes. There’s no caffeine or stimulants, so you can use half a scoop to a scoop any time to flavour your water and support hydration.

Do aminos have caffeine? No. Aminos + Hydration is caffeine and stimulant free, so it won’t affect your sleep or your energy levels.

Should I take aminos or protein? Protein first, since it’s your main source of amino acids. Aminos are handy for fasted training, hydration and sipping through a session, not as a protein replacement.

So, do you need them?

If your protein’s already sorted, you can take or leave a dedicated BCAA. Where Aminos + Hydration earns its place is the in-between moments: fasted sessions, long workouts, hot days, and making water something you’ll actually drink more of. If that sounds like you, give it a go.
